This was done by a group without using any computer generated effects, it was done by Stopmotion pictures. 700k pegs were used for that thing

Probably Origami, while the plants would be something you can get at a craft store.

Yeah. I just did a 3D version of Winter by Arcimboldo and I used some leaves from Michael's. They're cool.
